This national roadway in western Argentina, dating back to pre-highway times, spans approximately 5194 km from Cabo Vírgenes near Río Gallegos in Santa Cruz Province in the south to La Quiaca in Jujuy Province in the north.
Known as one of the world's longest highways, Ruta 40 is famous globally as a traditional road trip route. Starting at the Bolivian border, it runs parallel to the Andes until reaching Rio Gallegos. This section focuses on the Patagonia stretch, a crucial part of the journey between Bariloche and El Calafate.
Although the specific route is not documented, it is known that Ernesto Guevara, famously known as "Che" Guevara, explored various provinces along Ruta 40 including Santa Fé, Córdoba, San Luis, Santiago del Estero, Salta, Tucumán, Jujuy, Catamarca, La Rioja, San Juan, and Mendoza.
